Effaclar Duo has been hailed as the latest skin care saviour, helping to purify pores and reduce the appearance of imperfections. As a result, I was excited to try this product, I'd heard all the hype and truly believed that I too would benefit from it's miracle qualities.
I purchased this product and excitedly skipped home, that night I put it all over my face like a moisturiser as directed. I noticed a tingling sensation which I hadn't really expected, but I just went straight to sleep and let it work it's magic, it was after all going to transform my face come morning....
ERROR.
I woke up the next morning with a red, boiling hot face. I don't have sensitive skin so I was surprised I'd had an allergic reaction, and really disappointed that not only was the 'miracle' product obviously not for me, but at £13 a pop - it's not the cheapest product to have developed an allergy towards.
I was surprised that the instructions that came with this, didn't mention testing it on your skin first and in hindsight, I wished I'd put this on an isolated area before smothering myself in it.
Despite the European version not containing Benzyl Peroxide, the reaction I had seems to be very similar to that of many of the people that have used the US cream which does contain Benzyl Peroxide, so there's still something pretty powerful in there.
I know this is a great product for many people, but I'd advise exercising some caution. Thankfully, my face has made a full recovery.

Has anyone else had any bad experiences with the La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo?
wow that is interesting. I have very sensitive skin and this product has worked wonders on me. Where did you purchase it from. Have you been allergic to any of the ingredients before?
ReplyDeleteI got it from boots and have never had a skin allergy ever! So unlucky! X
DeleteI had the one which was supposed to be anti relapse. It never did anything quite as shocking as this but it certainly didn't help, the next day I had broken out majorly.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are well darling, take care!

Such a shame to hear you had a bad reaction to it and your right at £13 a pop that's not what you want. I think this is very much a product that you have to use over time to see results. It broke me out quite badly the first few days I used it but I'm starting to see results now...thank god. Shame it didn't work for you x

As Im typing this I have this product on my face and its boiling the face off me. Iv been using the product since yesterday and my face has gotten 100% worse. Iv all theses little white heads around my forehead, cheeks, nose and chin. I am prone to spots on my chin but not all over my face. My cheeks are raw red from using it. I would advice anyone get a tester before buying the product. Im very disappointed with this product as I had saw great reviews for it.
ReplyDeleteI recently brought this, ive been using it for about a week now, i definitely get what you mean by the burning sensation, i only had it once this week, i must say my pores are slightly smaller and my skin has broken out slightly, but i always think this happens when you use a new product on your face as your skin has to adjust it, i will see how it is after another week and decide if i will continue using it :)

It ate my face alive! It made any skin perfections I had much worse and took me weeks to get back to the way my skin was before I purchased it.

Oh no! I didn't get a rash just a red face but it went by the next day. Some cream like e45 might help? Otherwise I'm not sure I wouldn't want to recommend anything and risk making it worse! You may well be fine in 2 days! X
DeleteI have had exactly the same experience... and I wouldn't class myself as having overly sensitive skin either but as my wedding day was approaching fast I was so stressed out that my skin was getting worse by the day. I ditched all my products and moved to La Roche Posay including this alleged solution to all my problems. My cheeks are itching like mad and looking worse than ever before. After reading this I am DEFINITELY returning this product (when I bought it Boots had a 'money back' sticker on there so should be able to get a full refund thankfully). 10 days to my wedding so hoping my skin will calm down... A little tip: anti-histamines and/or corticosteroids (prescription) works wonders for a sudden skin allergy.
ReplyDeleteI know I'm a bit late but I recently tried this and skin has been itchy and red, I really didn't think it would be this product but it obviously is! Will have to stop using it 😟 x
ReplyDeleteMy daughter has had the same very bad reaction - red hot burnt face.

ReplyDeleteSimilar problem, itchy skin and left me with tiny bumps across my forehead. Won't be using it again!
ReplyDeleteSame, have just put it on for the first time 5 minutes ago and typed in 'La Roche Posay allergic reaction' and came across this. Annoyed I spent so much on this tiny tube!
ReplyDeleteYES YES YES! I too suffered a burning sensation around my eyes and soft delicate skin around my nose, cheeks and lips. It's now been 48 hours and I have white heads in various spots all over my face... Chin and cheeks especially (which was my problem area to begin with), but now all over my forehead, nose and mouth area. It seems to have also burnt the existing breakouts on my face and now as a result they look like they have become re-infected (puss filled and very sore for me to make any facial expressions that may tug or even relax the skin around them) and inflamed (very red and itchy). I've only ever heard good things about La Roche-Posay's line of skin care products, but after my reaction I will be returning the $120 worth of their range back to the Pharmacy at which I bought it! I have sensitive skin; dry and hardly ever suffered breakouts in my younger/teenage years, but since the age of 20ish I've been hit with Slightly oilier skin than normal, skin overwhelmed with blackheads and atleast three whiteheads every week, so naturally when I heard about LRP and their sterling rep with sensitive/eczema prone skin sufferers I set my long term use of Cetaphil aside and ran off to the shops to purchase the cure for my now horrendous skin with my wallet full of cash lol. I will never be so hasty and dive into anything without testing it on a small area again...
ReplyDeleteAtleast I'm not the only one struggling with these problems, thank you all for the tips to help get our skin back on track (or at least back to a semi-bearable state lol).
I'm going to continue with my Cetaphil and hoping routine... 😂
Take care 😊✌🏼️
My face is a red hot fire ball right now. I wish I had read this post before I purchased this product. Worst cream ever
ReplyDeleteUggggggh I wish I'd read this before buying! I too have had a terrible reaction to Effaclar Duo. My acne-prone skin was relatively calm prior to trying this product and now I have an itchy bumpy rash all along my chin, jawline, lower cheeks and forehead. I returned it today and then thought I'd see if others have had similar issues. I've never in my life had such a bad reaction to any product, and I've tried a LOT of different things!
ReplyDeleteAs I am writing this I have it on my face and it burns like a bad sun tan! I thought it was part if the therapy at first but as my face started to get puffy I started googling and found your blog. Doubt I would get a refund in Paris though! Thanks for talking about this!
ReplyDeleteI started using this and oh my gosh my skin is super dry and red! I'm skin has never been this dry! I'm definitely returning this!
ReplyDeleteIn thanks to the people he, his sister, friend came to contribute to the party in general and his birthday in particular, also do not know what to say than to thank everyone gave Ben 1 birthday Happy and happy ............. Wish everyone a new year more and more happy offline ...... Well in the past if I have to upset anyone then sorry, Ahihi.

I haven't been using it for even a week and my face looks like it's been burnt. I have very sensitive skin so I should have tested it but I really wanted something to get rid of spot marks on my face and now I'm just a dry, red mess! Can anyone suggest how to get rid of this?
ReplyDeleteI also got a reaction with la roche posay. I used their sunscreen as I have very sensitive skin. It made me extremely itchy.
ReplyDeleteThis product needs to be reported to health authorities and cosmetics regulators.
ReplyDeleteLike the poster and others, I do not have sensitive skin. But within only 2 days, this product gave me such severe dermatitis that (like other commenters) I had to take antihistamines and an antibiotic. It caused red, burning skin with white bumbs, and feels like a sunburn. It's been nearly a week and my skin is still rough, pink and uncomfortable.
I cannot caution other readers strongly enough against using this product. Spot testing can be useful, but testing on a place like on your arm will not necessarily give you an indication of how your face will react since facial skin is more porous and absorbs more.
I am still using it with like 5 burned looking big brown and reddish spots.. i cant even cover them with makeup.. i have just used them on spots and they are not clearing up,just getting worse
ReplyDeleteI bought this products a few days a go and as many of you I don't think my skin is overly sensitive but after I applied it on my face I was all red and it felt like I was burnt. It's really disappointing. I first I thought it was because I had just integrated it into my routine but I think I should stop using it.
ReplyDeleteI bought the Effaclar Duo Plus 12 days ago. When I started using it, I only had two spots that left some PIE (Post inflammatory Erythema) behind. Within 4 days I started getting spots on my chin (where I usually break out). Now, I thought its the salicylic acid that's purging me, but it got worse and worse. Today is day 12 and I'm tossing the crap in the bin. I have over 20 spots on my chin (some pus filled, some crusty healing ones..yuck), my chin is red and burning. Never have I looked this bad in my life and I have no idea what to do now or how to heal this. It seems all 'gentle/natural/whatever' products are irritating. Either because there's alcohol, parfume, parabens or whatever in it.Skin can be so different for everyone. I do wonder, what other people are doing to get their old skin back or make the break out/irritation go away...
